What Does "Cringe" Mean in English?

If you watch English content on TikTok or YouTube, you've almost certainly heard the word "cringe." I've even adopted it into my own vocabulary, because in many situations it's the only word that describes the moment perfectly. So what does cringe really mean, and how do you use it?

What Does "Cringe" Mean?

"Cringe" describes the awkward, uncomfortable feeling you get when you watch someone do something embarrassing, especially when they don't seem to realize it. It's often used when someone is trying very hard to be something they're not, and it just doesn't feel right.

In short, it's an uncomfortable reaction to someone else's lack of social awareness. The person has no idea how their actions look, and the audience feels the awkwardness for them.

Why Do People Say It?

Literally, to "cringe" means to pull back or flinch because of an unpleasant feeling. Picture your body shrinking away from something uncomfortable. That physical reaction is exactly where the modern slang comes from.

With the rise of social media, there are now countless videos where people do things that make viewers want to look away. Because there are so many of them, "cringe" became the go-to word to describe that feeling, and it spread quickly.

When Can You Use "Cringe"?

  • When you see something awkward or embarrassing online, like an over-the-top video

  • When you remember an embarrassing moment from your own life

  • When you describe something that feels forced or fake

  • In casual conversations with friends, family, or people your age

Business English Example

After a company posts an awkward promotional video, a coworker says: "That video with the forced dance moves was so cringe. I hope they don't make another one."

Note: "cringe" is informal, so use it carefully in workplace conversations and save it for relaxed chats with coworkers you know well.

Everyday English Example

Two friends are watching a video online: "Okay, I can't watch this. He's trying way too hard to look cool, and it's so cringe."

It also works for your own embarrassing moments: "I found an old video of myself singing in school, and it was so cringe."

Is It Good for IELTS?

"Cringe" is informal slang, so it fits best in relaxed, personal answers in IELTS speaking, for example when you talk about social media, embarrassing moments, or videos you've seen. Avoid it in IELTS writing and in formal situations. Examiners are happy to hear natural, informal English in speaking, but only when it fits the topic and isn't forced into every answer.
