Is Cheating on IELTS Worth the Risk?
One of the topics I came across today really stood out to me. It was an article about students getting caught for cheating on IELTS.
I am sure every student taking the IELTS examination has, at some point, come across some kind of offer to cheat. In fact, through my 10 plus years of teaching IELTS, I cannot count how many times students have asked me if there is a way to cheat the system.
My answer has always been the same.
Yes, there are many ways to cheat. But none of them are worth getting caught for.
The Consequences Are Serious
Let's talk about what happens when students get caught in today's world of English exams.
In recent news from Asia, a man caught cheating on IELTS was banned from taking the exam for 5 years. On top of that, his university felt disgraced by his action and decided to terminate his enrollment.
That one decision disrupted his entire future. His chances at higher education are now in limbo.
Is it worth it? That is a hard NO.
It Is Getting Worse
The consequences are not just academic. There are more and more cases of students being sentenced to jail for cheating on exams like IELTS and TOEFL.
In another case from Asia, a female student who paid someone to take her exam on her behalf was sentenced to 30 days in jail, in addition to punishment from her university.
How Are People Getting Caught?
From friends working at international English exam institutions, I learned that one of the biggest reasons people are getting caught is simply because so many people are cheating.
Here is how it works:
When one person gets caught, they face a hefty punishment.
To reduce that punishment, they start giving information.
They sell out the people who cheated for them.
They also report classmates and anyone else they know who is cheating.
One person getting caught can lead to many more getting caught. The risk keeps growing.
My Advice
Avoid cheating. It is simply not a realistic option anymore.
Instead:
Identify the areas where you need help.
Seek proper guidance and support.
Invest a few more hours into studying.
The effort you put into genuine preparation will always be worth more than the risk of cheating.
